MP3 SAMPLES

Here is the track listing for "Healed Through Time". Click the song title to hear the MP3. With each song, I included a little bit about the inspiration, or story behind the track. Hope you enjoy.

Lost in Thought

(whole song)

Lost in Thought: The title of this track comes from the three chords, and driving bass and drum combo that make up the bulk of the song. It reminded me of staring out a car window, and completely spacing out on a long drive. Maybe reflecting on the past, or wrapped up in a daydream. Whatever the case, the outside world no longer exists while in this almost catatonic state.

Surrounded by Beauty

(clip)

Surrounded by Beauty: I wrote this song in the fall of 2001. Despite it’s more positive vibe, I was actually quite sad when I wrote it. I played the demo version of the song for a friend of mine, which only had the rhythm guitars, bass and drum tracks. The first thing he said was, "wow, this is beautiful" I felt that summed up the feel of the track quite nicely.

Driven

(whole song)

Driven: The rhythm guitar parts of this track are actually chunks of several different songs that I had decided not use. I felt that some of the riffs were to cool to just throw away, so I slowly but surely pieced them together, threw a couple connecting chords in there, and had myself a new song. I wanted to write something that was rockin’ melodic, and had some feel to it. The Clean Guitars that come in underneath the Chorus, combined with the melody lead guitar, captured the vibe I was after.

So Softly

(clip)

So Softly: One of the more personal tracks on the CD. Inspired by a past relationship, I was on a mission to make a piece of music that captured the magic of falling in love. That "butterflies in the stomach" type of feeling that only comes along once in a while. From the first time you hold hands, to the sparks that fly from the first kiss, it’s truly a gift when you find someone, and share that special connection together.

See the Light

(clip)

See the Light: One of the two tracks I recorded myself with a Digital 8 track. I was in a lonely sort of mood, and I really wanted to express that feeling. One of the few times I have been able to take how I was feeling, pick up the guitar, and immediately turn it into music. The bulk of the song came very quickly, and I was really pleased with the resulting tracks I laid down. The solo section that comes towards the middle of the piece, was a bit more of a struggle. I would write something, rehearse the hell out it, and never get a good take. something always sounded off about it. After probably two months of trying to finish the song, I was on the verge of shelving it for a later release. I decided to try playing something with the Wah pedal, at this point I was desperate! Sure enough, it was the missing ingredient that brought it all together.

Race Day

(clip)

Race Day: This is just a fun, driving rock tune. My Satriani influence is in full swing here. I had a blast writing the lead parts for this song, a couple sections in perticular stand out on this one for me. First, the heavy Delay on the lead that kicks in after the breakdown turned out exactly as I had heard it in my head. Second, the swelling cluster of notes that ends the song. I love the feel and sound of this part, and it was totally unplanned. My producer Matt was playing back the first lead track I had recorded, and I played a different harmonizing note on top of it. We both thought it sounded great, so we proceeded to track layer upon layer of these harmonizing notes, until it gave it this sort of heavenly sound, almost like a chorus of angels singing. At least that’s what I picture when I hear it.

All My Tears

(clip)

All My Tears: This is the first song I wrote where I was able to really express how I was feeling, and have it come out the way I heard it in my head. This was an accomplishment for me, and something I had struggled with previous to writing most of these songs. In the fall of 2001, I had come to the end of an intense relationship, and was very heartbroken. I was literally crying when writing some of the rhythm guitar parts. But the cool part of it all was all the creative inspiration, and awesome musical ideas that were just pouring out of me. I was hearing all kinds of melody and lead guitar parts for this song in my head, and was able to find them on the guitar. I remember starting a new job, being trained, and hearing the melody that’s played over the bridge in my head for the first time. Here I am, new to a job and I’m trying for the life of me to remember this killer melody line, so I can play it when I get home. Meanwhile I’m paying no attention to the person training me for my new position.

Inside Your Heart

(clip)

Inside Your Heart: One of the last tracks to be written for the CD. I really like the sound of the acoustic guitars layered with the clean guitars, gives the track a nice full sound. Besides the main melody, most of the lead parts were improvised in the studio. Quite different from the normal "mapped out" and rehearsed tactic I used for most of the other songs.

After Dark

(clip)

After Dark: I got the title for this one from the intro section of the song. It gave me the feeling of being outside, late at night, looking up at the stars, and hearing nothing but the crickets. I had the intro with the clean guitars written first, and later attached the distorted rhythm parts. This is another song where I wanted to make a rock statement that wasn’t just about shredding. I wanted it to tell a sort of story. One of my favorites on the CD.

Strings From Heaven

(whole song)

Strings From Heaven: Probably the most personal song on the CD. This is dedicated to a close friend who died in the Fall of 2002. I miss him very much, and to me this song totally nails the feel I was after. It came together quicker than anything else I have ever recorded. From Start to finish, I wrote and tracked it in less than a day. I recorded it at home on my Digital 8 track one unemployed afternoon. The keyboard sound that’s going on is actually two tracks of clean guitar, played with an effect on it called "like a synth" I would strum the chord, and volume swell it, giving it that "heavenly" sound. I just kept layering guitar tracks, until I had only one left for the lead.
